On the Road Again !

2010 Has been loaded with a lot of things so fare: a wedding, a lot of office work, which didn't let me a lot of time for the boat. until the last couple of weeks.
I now moved out of my house to live in the hometown of my lovely wife.
And the biggest part of the move, was done yesterday. Many thanks to all my friends that came to help. One good news, she is light, really light !
2010 a deja ete tres charge pour moi: un mariage, beaucoup de boulot au bureau, donc pas beaucoup de temps pour bosser sur le bateau, au moins jusqu'au week end dernier.
J'ai maintenant demenage pour vivre dans la ville natale de ma femme bien-aime. Et le plus gros morceau du demenagement a ete deplace hier, merci a tous les amis venu aider pour l'occasion. Une bonne nouvelle, le bateau est leger, tres leger !

Hull Lamination

For Easter, we didn't have time to play with the easter bunny, Marc, Fred and I we fiberglassed the whole hull . It sure was a long day, but she sure looks good ! Marc & Fred joined me around 10:00 that morning, waiting for them I finish to prep the hull (did you ever vaccum clean a boat hull ?) After a coffee we were ready to roll. First we cutted the glass and the peel tape. Then we dry fitted everything on the hull.
Then we followed a very organized pattern on the job : one was mixing up the resin and the other were rolling the glass and the resin on the hull, by 5:30 we were done ! The laminate looks really nice, I'm very happy. Nothing better than a cool beer to celebrate that.
Lucky you, I did attach a view of the transom, that made my azalea blooming !



Pour Paques, nous n'avons pas eu le temps de courrir apres les oeufs en chocolat, Marc, Fred et moi avons stratifie l'ensemble de la coque. Cela a ete une grosse journee, mais le resultat est top ! Marc et Fred, sont arrive vers 10 hrs, en les attendants j'ai fini de prepare la coque (avez vous deja passe l'aspirateur sur une coque de bateau ?). Apres le caffe nous etions pres. d'abord nous avons debite les morceaux de tissus et de film de delaminage, en verifians que tout cela se pose bien en place sur la coque.
Puis nous nous sommes repartis les taches, l'un pompait et melangait la resine pendant que les deux autres mouillaient et impregnaient la coque et la fibre. a 5h30 nous avions finie ! la stratification a l'air bien propre, je suis tres content. Nous n'avons rien trouve de mieux qu'une biere bien fraiche pour feter cela.

In the mind time

I did slow down a little on my physical work on the boat building, but I did make other people work for me ! I did work with vector works marine (www.vectorworksmarine.com) to make some toolings for my rudder, daggerboard and keel fine.

We had some technical challenges between the designer file, some modification made on my side and Vector Marine, but everything worked well at the end. Big thank you to Ben for his help getting the file straight !
Now I just have to get the shape shipped from Florida to me casa, and the make parts out of those mold !


J'ai un peu ralenti sur ma participation physique dans la construction du bateau, par contre je me suis mis a faire travers les autres pour moi !
En effet j'ai sous traite a Vector works marine (www.vectorworksmarine.com) la fabrication de moule pour mes safrans, derive et voile de quille.
Apres quelques challenges techniques entre les fichiers de l'architecte, quelques modifications de mon crues et le logiciel de Vector Works, nous avons reussi a se parler.
un grand grand merci a Ben pour avoir reussi a faire parler les fichiers !
Maintenant, il n'y a plus qu'a envoyer les moules depuis la Floride, et a fabrique des pieces !

Glassing the Hard Shines

After 2-3 weeks of lower activity on the boat building, I'm back in business. I'm now attacking the main fiberglass job on the hull. For that one my good Friend Marc came to help.
That step is about glassing the shine with a 12 Oz bi axial glass tape.
The glass is covered with a peel tape for a clean finish.



You can see a pictures at the bow and at the transom. It took us 6 hours to sand before glassing and to apply the tape on all 9 shines.
The last pictures is the same after removing the peel tape and 8 hours of sanding, sure epoxy is tough to send. my shoulders were stiff for 2 or 3 days. The fairing is sure gonna be fun !

Apres 2-3 semaines de calme sur la construction du bateau, me revoila a l'attaque. Je demarre maintenant le majeur travail de stratification: la coque. Je ne m'y attaque pas tout seul, mon bon pote Marco est venu me donner un coup de main.
Il s'agit maintenant de stratifier des bandes de fibres de verre de 400 gr, recouvers d'un tissus de delaminage pour faire un beau fini.

Vous pouvez voir une photo de l'etrave et du tableau arriere une fois finie. Cela nous apris 6 heures depuis le poncage de l'enduit jusqu'a la pose des tissus sur les 9 bouchains.
La derniere photo montre le resultat apres enlevement des tissus de dela et 8 heures de poncage. L'epoxy est clairement dure a poncer, mes epaules ont ete un peu grippe pendant 2-3 jours apres cela.
J'attends l'etape d'enduit / poncage avec impatience !

A hole int he hull !

There is a hole in the hull !!!
Actually now there is 5 cut-outs in my boat. All that time spent to make a nice sealed hull and now I'm cutting it with the jig saw.

The first "hole" you can see on the left, rectangular cut out, is the opening for the keel. By the way, To do that job I had to stand on the hull, so Mum don't worry the boat is going to be strong, she can hold my weight already !
The second one, with a eye shape is for the daggerboard. There is one on each side. I decided to cut them before the lamination and the finish of the hull. Will see how it goes.

The last one is at the back it does have a triangular shape. It's were the rudder casing is going to sit. I don't know if you can see that, but I did rout out the foam and fill it with epoxy putty to prepare for the lamination. I received several request to show the stern of the boat. My beauty is a little shy, she is not ready yet to let me take a picture of her full behind. I hope that the last pics will give you an idea of how she will look like.

Il y a un trou dans la coque !!!
En fait, non pas un mais 5 "trous" ont fait leur apparition dans la coque. Tout ce temps passe a faire une belle coque bien etanche et maintenant je l'attaque a la scie sauteuse.
Le premier "trou", en haut a gauche de forme rectangulaire, est l'ouverture sur le puit de quille. Au passage, pour faire ce boulot, il a fallu que je monte sur la coque. Donc Maman pas d'inquietude le bateau va etre solide, il peut deja supporte mon poids !

Le second, en forme d'oeil, est pour les derive asymetrique. Il y en a un de chaque cote. J'ai decide de les ouvrirs avant la stratification de la coque, on verra plus tard si j'ai eu raison.
Enfin le dernier a l'arriere de forme rectangualire, est l'ouverture qui va recevoir le sabot de safran. Je ne sais pas si vous pouvez vor cela, mais j'ai defonce la mousse du sandwich et j'ai re rempli tout ca avec de l'epoxy charge.
Pour finir, j'ai recu plusieurs requete me demandant des photos de la proue de mon bateau. Il est un peu timide et ne m'a pas laisse prendre des photo complete de son derriere. La derniere photo est un apercu, j'espere pouvoir faire mieux la prochaine fois.

The boat got a bow !

I just finished the last planking yesterday, and today I'm working on the bow. She does look like a boat now, doesn't she ?
So I fixed the bow shap at the front of bulkhead #1. It's just tempory to do some lamination then I will remove the shape.
By the way, I told it was getting cold, this morning we had maybe 2" of snow.


I start glassing the bottom part of the bow, then I will remove the shape to glass the bow from the inside. I probably have 2 maybe 3 more days on that project.

J'ai fini la pose du dernier borde hier, et aujourd'hui je me suis attaquer a la pose de l'etrave. Ca ressemblance plus a un bateau comme ca, non ?

Alors j'ai visse l'etrave dans la cloison #1, c'est juste temporaire, car une fois stratifie je vais enlever le shape.
Au passage je vous avez bien dit qu'il faisait froid en ce moment, ce matin nous avons eu pas loin de 5 cm de neige.

Donc j'ai stratifie la partie basse de l'etrave, ensuite j'enleve le gabarit et je stratifie de l'interieur enfin je pourrais bosser sur la partie haute de l'etrave. J'en ai certainement pour encore 2/3 jours de boulot ... sur cette partie

When it's cold outside

I'have been a little sick for the last few days and the weather is turning cold again. So I decided to work inside the house. It's good thing that my roomate went away for couple of days, I don't know how she would have like some boat building in the middle of the salon ! So I start that "inside session" with the assembly of the last plank for the hull.

Then I start working on a new subject, the shape for the bow of the boat. I work with some 2.5" foam. I glued 3 pieces together to have the thickness I need.
Then I sliced the foam every 200 mm. the designer gave ma 200 mm section of the bow. I glued the section and cut it at the shape.
The final assembly is called "cushion bonding" it's inspired from other high tech industry ! I'm sure that you noticed the 70's shower curtain. Just didn't want to bond the bow to the wood floor...

J'ai ete un peu malade ces derniers jours et le temps est en train de revirer au froid, J'ai donc decider de bosser a l'interieur aujourd'hui. La bonne nouvelle, c'est que ma colloc est partis pour quelques jours. Bonne nouvelle, car je ne sais pas si elle aurait aurait apprecier de la construction navale comme activite de salon.
J'ai donc commence cette session en interieur par l'assemblage des 2 derniers panneaux de coque.

Comme je commence a etre bon, cela ne m'a pas pris trop longtemps et ensuite j'ai embrailler sur le shape d'etrave du bateau. Je travaille pour cela avec de la mousse de 60 mm d'epaisseur, j'en ai colle 3 morceau pour avoir l'epaisseur souhaite.
Ensuite j'ai fait des coupes tous les 200mm, ce que vous voyez ce sont les couples d'etrave donne par l'archi, reste plus qu'a decouper. Vous noterez au passage la finesse des entree d'eau !
L'assemblage final est appele "collage au coussin", c'est une technique assez pointu, mais le resultat est surprenant. Je suis surs que vous avez appreciez le rideau de douche ambiance 70's, bah oui, faudrait pas coller l'etrave sur le plancher... Read more et La suite en Francais !

First lamination in the hull

Before I'm finish the planking of the hull I need to do a small laminate job.
I need to glass the bulkhead and the plank together, if I don't do it now, I will have no way to do it later. The only thing, it's an up side down job, in a tight little spot !





The first step is to fillet each angle. I use a PVC pipe coupling to do a 1-1/4" radius. My resin is west sytem, I blend it with 3/4 of silica and 1/4 of filleting blend.
The next step is to laminate the glass tape. I use a 12 oz bi axial tape. To make it easier I wet the glass first on a table then I apply it on the filet.
After rolling it to get ride of the void, I used a peel ply.


The peel ply, is removed when the glass is dry. It give a nice smooth finish and reduce te sanding.

Avant de finir la coque, je dois faire un petit peu de strat. Je dois faire les liaisons de cloison et de bordes a l'avant. Je dois le faire maintenant sinon je n'aurais plus d'acces.Le seul truc c'est qu'il va falloir travailler la tete en bas, dans un tout petit recoin.


La premiere etape c'est de faire des conges dans chaque angle. J'utilise un morceau de tube PVC pour faire des rayons de 30 mm. J'utilise la resine West system que je charge avec un mix de 3/4 silicium et 1/4 de fibre de conges.L'etape suivante c'est la strat proprement dite. J'applique des bandes de bibiais de 400 gr. Pour plus de facilite, je "mouille" mes tissus sur une table avant de les mettre en place.Enfin, apres avoir bien ebulle, j'utilise un tissus d'arrachage. Ce tissus sera enleve une fois sec.Cela donnera un fini bien regulier et reduit le poncage.

Hull planking half way

The planking is moving well forward, I done we the installation of 3 of the 5 pannel on each side. I definitely have my little routine going on. routing the pannel, but joining, pre positionning, adjusting, clamping, filleting.

It's, obviously faster to say it than to do it, but it's coming along. 2 more to go ! I should be done by the end of the week

Le lattage de la coque avance pas mal du tout. J'ai deja installe 3 des 5 borde sur chaque bord. Je maitise maintenant bien la technique : former les gorges a la "toupie", collage avec les languettes, positionnement a blanc, ajustage, serrage et collage avec des conges.
Biensur, c'est plus rapide a dire qu'a faire, mais ca le fait bien. Encore 2 et la coque est complete. Je pense avoir finie cette etape d'ici la fin de semaine.

Tent, the come back !

After cleaning up the mess and protecting the boat, an evaluation of the situation was necessary. The tent could have been repair but it will not be an easy task, so I decided to buy a new one. After another saturday of tent assembly ( we start to be good a it) the tent is now standing up on the side of my house. I'm sure that you notice a small change in the color, Yes me too, I love those white and blue strip !


This time I was a little more carefull in the anchoring in the ground, each post is hold in place by a rope attached to a 24" "screw" !
I pulled hard, it's not moving, knock on wood !

Apres le nettoyage et la protection du bateau, une session d'evaluation des degat s'est impose. J''aurais pu reparer la tente, mais cela n'aurait pas ete une tache facile et le resultat pas garantie a moyen terme, j'ai donc decide d'acheter une nouvelle. Apres un autre samedi d'assemblage (on commence a pas etre mauvais) la tente est maintenant firement dresse le long de la maison. Vous remarquez sans doute une petit difference de couleur ? Oui moi aussi j'adore ces rayures bleu et blanche !

Cette fois j'ai porte beaucoup plus d'attention dans la fixation de la tente au sol. Chaque poteau est maintenu en place par une cord attache a une "vis" de 60 cm de long.J'ai tire dessus de toutes mes forces, ca ne bouge pas, touchons du bois !

The boat first gale ! / La premiere tempete du bateau !

Wenesday january the 8th, a sever weather condition was travelling through South Carolina, several gale warning were issued on the coast and I believe that in florence, wind higher then 40 knots were recorded !
When I gat home that night, I found the "shop" completely wiped out.
The tent literaly back flip and ended up in my backyard smatch against my pecan tree, that was not pretty !

Here is the pics from of the tent resting on the tree. Nothing much to do that night but trying to clean up and protect the boat. Thanks a lot to Scott and Dara for the big help ! We used the roof as the tarp on the boat, after a quick inspection the boat was fine, she work her way through the storm without any trouble !

Mercedi 8 janvier, une perturbation severe a traverser la Caroline du Sud. Plusieurs avis de tempete ont ete emis sur la cote et apparement des vents de plus de 40 noeuds on ete enregistre sur Florence. Quand je suis rentre a la maison, ce soir la, j'ai retouve "mon atelier" completement devaste. La tente s'est litteralement retoune et s'est retrouve ecrase dans mon jardin, contre mon arbre a pecan, quel desastre !

Vous pouvez voir des photos de cette nuit, la tente, demantibulee, repose entre l'arbre et la pelouse. Pas grand chose a d'autre a faire que d'essayer de tout ranger et de proteger le bateau. Un grand merci a Scott et Dara pour le coup de main ! Nous avons utilise le toit de la tente pour proteger le bateau. Apres une inspection rapide, le bateau parait en parfait etat. Il a traverse sa premiere tempete sans souci !

Keel Box / boitier de quille

To finish the longitudinal structure of the boat, I installed the keel bulkhead and the stringer forward and aft of the keel.
That one was a fun one. A lot of small wood jig, a used halyard to fixed the keel boxes to the hull and a lot of clamp, especially for the aft part (see below)
the result looks really good, I did set everything in place with some small fillet, not an easy job while you are fighting the gravity !
I will complet the filleting and the glassing when the boat will be turn around.


Pour finir la structure longitudinale, j'ai installe le bas des 2 cloisons de puit de quille and les longerons en avant et en arriere du puit.
Cela n'a pas ete une tache facile. J'ai du fabrique plusieurs petit gabarit et utilise une vieille drisse pour suspendre le caisson de quille a la coque. Ensuite, l'astuce c'est d'utiliser plein de serre-joint et le tours et joue !
Le resultat est plutot pas mal. Ensuite j'ai tout fixe en place avec des petits conges en epoxy (je vous raconte pas la tete en bas a lutter contre la gravite).
Je finirais les les liaisons des cloisons, longerons et de la coque, une fois que le bateau sera retourne. Cela permettra un travail beaucoup plus propre.

Bottom Pannel planking / Pose des panneaux de fond de coque

The hull is starting to appear !
Just Before the end of the year celebration, I did a good step forward on the construction. Now the boat has some of her hull in place.
The first two pannels does fit fairly well in place.
I first clamp them in place, then set them with some tempory screw and cleat. It was starting to be late so I did have chance yet to fillet the pannel to the bulkhead.

Here is a view of the transom and the end of the hull (offset about 250 mm) and below is a view of the inside where the hull has been reinforce for the keel.

Juste avant la celebration du nouvel an, j'ai fait un bon pas en avant sur la construction. Maintenant le bateau a une partie de sa coque en place.Les 2 premier panneaux sont maintenant parfaitement en place.



J'ai d'abord tout positionner au serre-joint, puis j'ai mis des tasseaux et des vis temporaire. Il commencer a etre tard donc J'ai n'ai pas encore eu le temps de faire les joints de conge.

Bottom hull pannel / Panneaux de fond de coque

Since 25 foot long sheets is not existing on the market for obvious reason. Part of the fun of boat building is to assemble pannel together. With plywood you can use the good old scarfing methods but with those fancy sandwich pannel there is an easy way, the spline methods.

First dado the pannels the thickness of the core (BTW this is the finger eater router !)


Then insert a spline (here a 15 mm okoume), brush with thickened epoxy, clamp and let set.
On the bottom pannel I also did remove the core to insert a plywood reinforcement where the swing keel is going to rest. Below is a picture of the final result it took me a good sweat and almost 2 hours to get to that point.
Then same thing, epoxy, clamp and time for a solid bonding.
There is a view of the 2 bottom pannel bonded and clamp in my shade, then finish ready to be sand down and install on the boat.

Comme des planches de 7 m de long n'existe pas (ce serait un peu la misere a stocker chez Casto !). Et bien le jeu consiste a raboutter plusieurs panneaux ensemble.
Avec du CP on effectue des scarfs, c'est long et fastidieux, mais avec ce panneau sandwich, on peut utiliser des cles d'assemblage.
D'abord il faux defoncer l'ame en mousse (au passage, je vous presente la defonceuse mangeuse de doigt...)




Ensuite il faut inserer une cle (ici du CP en okoume de 15), apres on applique de l'epoxy chargee, on immobilise et on laisse le temps et la chimie moderne faire son travail. Sur les panneaux de fond de coque, j'ai du retirer l'ame du sandwiche au niveau de la quille et la remplacer par un insert en CP.
Ci dessus une photo une fois le travail fini (cela ma pris pres de 2 heures et une bonne sue pour en arriver la), ensuite meme choise, epoxy, serre-joint et temps pour obtenir une collage bien costaud.
Tout en bas il y a des photos des panneaux colles et clampe dans mon apenti et fini pres a etre poncer sous la tente.

Bulkhead set up / Montage des cloisons

Christmas is coming with some wonderfull vacation, allowing me to have full days dedicated to the boat !

Now was the time to level the strong back and to set the bulkhead in place as a frame for the hull.


I used a laser level (on the stand on the left), a plumb line, a center line, a spirit level and a lot of patience !

When all the bulkhead were up I start bonding the longitudinal structure.

After about 3 days of work this is what the frame looks like. It finally start taking the shape of a boat !


Le pere Noel, en plus des cadeaux m'a apporrte 2 semaines de vacances. J'ai donc peu dedie des journee complete a la construction.

C'etait donc le moment de mettre le le marbre de niveau et de monter les cloison pour former la structure qui supporteras la coque.


J'ai utilise un niveau laser (faut vivre avec son temps) mais aussi un fil a plomb, un niveau a bulle, une line d'axe et beaucoup, de patience.

Apres avoir monte toutes les cloisons, j'ai commence a installer les strcutures longitudinales.
Voici un apercu de ce a quoi cela ressemble apres 3 jours de boulot, cela commence a prendre la forme d'un bateau !

Tent and Strong back / tente and montage du marbre

Now that a most of the material was cut it was time to really start the job ! With my friend Marc we worked on the assembly of the strong back that we set on the side of my house. That was a good exemple of what can be achieve with some 2x6 and 2x4 !

Then I did recrute a lot friend from Florence to put that nice wedding tent of mine together.

That beginning of december was surely really sunny but it was really cold !

It was amazing to find out that a wedding tetn is hold together by tarp and benji cord !

Finnally there is a pictures of what it look likes from the inside and from the outside, the neighbour for sure will have to get use to that white tent for the next couple of month !

Maintenant que la majorite du materiel est decoupe, il etait temps de passer au chose serieuse ! Avec mon pote Marc, nous nous sommes attaque a la fabrication du marbre sur le quel va etre construit le bateau. Nous l'avons installe sur le cote de ma maison, c'etait une bonne experience culturelle de constrcution a l'americaine.

Apres j'ai recrute une grande partie de mes amis de Florence pour construire ma merveilleuse tente de maraiage.Vous pouvez voir que malgre le soleil ca caille dure en caroline.

C'est assez marrant de voir que la tente finalement tient uniquement grace a la toile et a de tres tres nombreux elastique.

Maintenant , voici 2 vues de ce a quoi cela ressemble de l'interieur et de l'exterieur, les voisins vont devoir s'habituer a grande tente pour les prochains mois.

Cutting hull and deck pannel / Debit des panneaux de coque et pont

After 2 month working on the bulkhead, it took us 2 month to find someone available to cut the hull and deck pannel ! We found Jesse Rhodes that work with high tower boatworks (check out their website, they are building amazing boat
http://www.hightowerboatworks.com./). If you have a CNC job to do in the Low country area, give him a buzz, Jesse know what he is doing !


So we spent 3 hours in Charleston with Max and Jesse cutting all the hull, deck and roof pannel.

Those are 2 skin of 3 mm okoume with a core of 15 mm PVC foam. Quiet light and very stiff !

For the occasion I rented a nice van to transport the pannel for the 2 boats that we are building.

Difficult to imagine that there is 2 boat worth of matrial in the back of that van !

Apres 2 mois passes a monte les cloisons, il nous a encore fallu 2 mois pour trouver quelqu'un de disponible pour couper les panneaux de coque et de pont. Nous avons rencontre Jesse Rhodes qui travaille avec high tower boatworks (au passage allez visiter son site web, il font de super bateau http://www.hightowerboatworks.com/.)
D'ailleurs si jamais vous avez un debit CN a faire realiser dans le coin de Charleston, appelez Jesse, il fait du super boulot !

Nous avons donc passe 3 heures a Charleston, Max Jesse et moi a debiter les panneaux de coque, de pont et de roof.

Ils sont aussi fait en sandwich, 2 peaux d'okoume de 3 mm et une ame en mousse de PVC de 15 mm, tres leger et tres rigide !

Pour l'occasion j'ai loue un van tout neuf pour transporter les panneaux pour les 2 bateaux. Si il avait ete noir, je me serais pris pour Baracudda dans l'agence tout risque !

Difficile de croire qu'il a de quoi fabriquer 2 bateaux a l'arriere de ce van, non ?
